Jacksonville Sanitation Worker Killed After Garbage Truck Reverses Over Him, Police Confirm

A sanitation worker was killed in a crash in a Jacksonville neighborhood Friday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

According to JSO Sergeant Hungerford, the crash occurred around 11:17 a.m. in the 10200 block of Driftwood Hills Drive.

Hungerford stated that a Meridian Waste van was reversing when the worker, a 22-year-old man, “attempted to jump onto the vehicle and slipped.” The sergeant added that as a result, the garbage truck’s back wheels ran over the victim.

“Jacksonville Fire Rescue did respond and pronounced him deceased at the scene,” Hungerford informed me.

Police say the garbage truck driver is a man in his mid-40s.

“I do believe that we are going to retrieve some video, we’re still working on that,” Hungerford told the crowd. “But, I don’t perceive criminal charges in this scenario, it’ll be hard to say that that would be criminal nature.”

According to JSO, the incident was the 157th traffic fatality in Duval County this year. The agency is actively looking into the situation.
