In Warren, Michigan, two top officials from Fitzgerald Public Schools have been arrested and placed on administrative leave.
Superintendent Hollie Stange and Food Services Director Amanda Carroll were allegedly found smoking marijuana near school grounds and driving under the influence.
On December 20, 2024, police observed Stange and Carroll smoking marijuana in a vehicle near the intersection of 9 Mile Road and Ryan Road, within 1,000 feet of school property.
After leaving the area in separate vehicles, both were stopped by officers. Stange was reportedly under the influence, and a firearm was discovered in her car.
Carroll was also found to be under the influence during her traffic stop.
Stange faces charges including possession of marijuana on school grounds (a two-year felony), possession of a weapon in a weapon-free zone (a 93-day misdemeanor), and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (a 93-day misdemeanor).
Carroll is charged with possession of marijuana on school grounds (a two-year felony), operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated second offense (a one-year misdemeanor), and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated with an occupant under 16 years old (a one-year misdemeanor).
Both were arraigned on December 21, with bonds set at $5,000 each. A bond hearing is scheduled for December 23.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido expressed deep concern over the allegations, emphasizing the responsibility these officials have for student well-being and the breach of community trust their actions represent.
In response, the Fitzgerald Public Schools Board of Education held a meeting on December 22, unanimously voting to place both Stange and Carroll on administrative leave.
The board is initiating an internal review and plans to appoint interim replacements for their positions.
They assured the community of their commitment to maintaining high professional standards and transparency throughout the process.
This incident has raised significant concerns within the community, highlighting the importance of trust and responsibility among school officials. The district has pledged full cooperation with law enforcement during the ongoing investigation.
