New York’s Governor Hochul said that a plan for an Inflation Refund, a one-time payment, will be presented to her for single filers and joint filers with up to $150,000 annually and jointly $300,000, getting respectively $300 and $500.
The package is funded by a surplus of $3 billion from sales taxes generated partly due to upward inflation. The revenues should go to the pocket of taxpayers as they would be, “It’s your money, and it should be back in your pockets,” Hochul said, citing this initiative that aims for direct financial relief to New Yorkers.

The different groups of people will receive varying benefits under the governor, and their basic needs differ. Governor Hochul’s proposed state budget for 2026 will contain the one-time “Inflation Refund” she plans to implement next month. The plan must reach the state legislature by the deadline of April 1.
Once passed, her office says payments will start up in fall 2026. Hochul described the initiative as part of a more significant affordability push leading up to her State of the State address on January 14.
She clarified that supporting working families and essential workers like healthcare workers, bus drivers, laborers, first responders, and teachers was key to ensuring they could afford to stay in New York.

Hochul’s proposal responds to affordability concerns, mainly after Trump gained support in New York over this issue. While Trump lost New York, he made significant gains in the State and the city.
Rep. Ritchie Torres called Hochul’s plan political and incomplete in battling inflation. He claimed that a one-time refund can’t offset years of double-digit inflation under Hochul’s governorship.
Torres was critical of Hochul restarting congestion pricing, which priced entry into Manhattan below 60th Street at $9. Torres accused Hochul of “taking with one hand and giving with the other.
