Louisville Teen Dies in Crash After Police Chase, Family Remembers Son as 'heart' of Their Family

A Louisville lady shared photos and memories of her 14-year-old son, who died in an early-morning automobile crash in Okolona on Saturday.

Danielle McKune lost her son, Keayland, in what the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office described as an accident. “He could light up any room,” McKune stated on Monday. “He was really funny. “He was my heart.”

According to Louisville Metro authorities spokesperson Aaron Ellis, authorities discovered a vehicle with two occupants that had been reported stolen near the Jefferson County line at 3:50 a.m. Saturday.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver drove away at dangerous speeds. Police did not pursue the vehicle and turned off their emergency equipment, according to Ellis. However, cops noticed sparks approximately a half mile down the road, in the same direction that the vehicle was traveling.

Officers later discovered an overturned vehicle on the 10300 block of National Turnpike in Fairdale. They suspect it was the same vehicle that escaped from the police.

Keayland, 14, died at the scene, while another adolescent was rushed to Norton Children’s Hospital with injuries that were thought to be non-life-threatening. It is not yet known who was driving.

McKune stated she had no idea why her son was in the car and is in shock over the loss. “It’s the only thing a mom can say is ‘No, it’s not true,'” she told me.

Mary McKune, the boy’s aunt, said she believes he was attempting to “fit in.” “He just wanted to be approved of,” she explained.

According to the family, several individuals gathered near their home on Lipps Lane in Okolona shortly after the collision. They claimed that someone in the neighborhood had a gun and was recording the family, instructing them to remain silent.

“Once my nephew realized what was going on, he pulled his gun,” McKune told me.

According to his relatives, he shot a woman out of worry for their safety.

“He adores his family. Danielle McKune described her nephew as someone who would do everything for his family. “He was protecting us and he felt like we were in danger.”

According to LMPD spokesperson Aaron Ellis, officers responded to a shooting in the 1200 block of Lipps Lane, just off Preston Highway, around 10 a.m. Saturday. When police came, they discovered a woman outside who had been shot. She was rushed to the hospital but died shortly afterwards.

Police spokesperson John Bradley said in a written statement Monday that the department’s homicide section is investigating, and the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office will eventually decide if the homicide was justified or whether charges should be filed.

Bradley stated that there are currently no arrests. The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office has not responded to a request for comment as of Monday evening.
