Fatal Wisconsin Crash Leads to Discovery of Newborn Left Alone in Smoke-filled Apartment Investigation Ongoing

DDN – Police in Wisconsin are still investigating a fatal crash that led them to a newborn who was left alone in a neighboring smoke-filled apartment.

Neenah police reported a driver, subsequently identified as 22-year-old Justin Hartjes, died after colliding with a tree late Saturday night.

According to authorities, the child was under his care and discovered inside their flat, which was full of smoke from food cooking in an oven that had been left on.

The infant was not wounded in the incident, however he has already been placed in the care of relatives.

A witness told police that Hartjes was going up to 80 mph that night before colliding with the tree on South Park Avenue.

The 22-year-old driver was rescued from his burning vehicle, but he died.

Police said they initially believed the kid was in the car with Hartjes, but when they couldn’t find him, officers proceeded to the apartment.

The crash site has been transformed into a memorial, with friends and relatives placing objects at the base of the tree in Hartjes’ remembrance.

Neenah police say Saturday night’s events are still under investigation.
