DDN: An individual who had previously attended the University of Tampa and was accused of taking the life of her newborn child appeared in court in Hillsborough County on Thursday morning.
After giving birth to a baby in April in a dorm bathroom at the University of Tampa, Brianna Moore, who was 19 years old at the time, is accused by the police of suffocating her newborn.
Moore was taken into custody in October, some months after the authorities assert that she had given birth to the child and then abandoned it to perish in a garbage can.
Following the delivery of her child, Moore allegedly wrapped the infant in a towel and placed her in a garbage can, as stated in the court records.
The prosecution had previously stated that roommates and suitemates eventually heard screaming, discovered the incident, and phoned the police immediately afterward.
An autopsy revealed that the infant had broken ribs and had died as a result of asphyxia.
Moore made an appearance in court on Thursday for a hearing, during which her counsel approached the judge to request that the case be postponed.
“We have not had the occasion to prosecute a case like this in a while, but when the opportunity came for us to investigate this case, we followed the law,” State Attorney Suzy Lopez, of the 13th Judicial Circuit stated.
According to the police, Moore stated that she may have been in denial about the fact that she was pregnant during a previous court appearance.
In the past, a judge has stated that the specifics of this case are sufficient to cause anyone to feel uneasy.

“It’s absolutely heartbreaking and she made a choice, so she’s going to have to face consequences for making the choice that she did,” Lopez stated.
An attorney for Moore has previously stated that she has been forthcoming with the investigators and that there is no information that indicates that she poses a threat of fleeing the scene.
The new trial date for Moore was set for the month of July by a court on Thursday.

“We, of course, in making our filing decision, did our due diligence,” Lopez stated. “We wanted to make sure that we chose the right charge, and we did. We have not had anything like this in quite a long time.”
The office of the state attorney has stated that Moore is being charged with multiple offenses, one of which is aggravated manslaughter.
Moore was previously given a bond of $262,500 by a federal judge.
