DDN: In relation to the horrific mass shooting that occurred during an unauthorized party in Detroit last summer, a 19-year-old male has been officially accused. The shooting, which took place on July 7, 2024, left two people dead and 19 more injured. It was one of the most horrific violent events to hit the city in recent memory.
On January 7, 2025, the suspect—who was identified as Detroit resident Demitrus Tiwan Shaw—was arrested. Shaw is currently facing serious accusations for what happened that night, including 21 counts of felony firearm possession, 19 counts of assault with intent to murder, and two counts of first-degree murder.
Given the seriousness of the charges against him, he was arraigned in court and committed to jail on a $1 million bond after his arrest.
Early on July 7, the fatal shooting occurred at an unauthorized gathering in Detroit’s 13800 block of Rossini Drive. Shaw allegedly used a handgun to start fire into a crowded location at around 2:25 a.m.
Two young people were killed in the shooting: Phillip Arnold, 21, of Detroit, and Shanae Fletcher, 20, of Harrison Township. Tragically, the violence claimed the lives of both victims.
The tragedy was further highlighted by the fact that 19 additional people, ages 16 to 24, suffered injuries ranging from mild to critical.
Investigators said that Shaw left chaos and heartache in his wake after shooting several shots into the gathering and then ran away. After months of investigation, Detroit police executed 11 search warrants in two counties, making substantial progress in the case.
Shaw’s arrest was one of several that resulted from these concerted efforts, proving the teamwork required to hold individuals accountable.
On January 21, 2025, Shaw is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause conference, during which more case details will be examined. On January 27, 2025, a preliminary examination is planned to provide additional legal analysis of the charges and evidence against him.
