LAFAYETTE, Ind. (DDN) – An accident in the northbound lanes of Interstate 65, between the Dayton and Frankfort exits, caused significant traffic delays on Tuesday morning. Indiana State Police Sgt. Jeremy Piers reported that efforts were underway to reopen one lane of traffic as of 9 a.m.
The initial backup, which began around 8 a.m., occurred when a vehicle veered off the road and rolled over. A second vehicle stopped to assist but was subsequently struck by another car. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.
Light snow had started falling in the area around the same time as the crash, but authorities could not confirm whether road conditions contributed to the accident. By 10:30 a.m., conditions had deteriorated further, leading to several additional traffic incidents, as indicated by scanner traffic.
At 10:53 a.m., reports from 511in.org identified black ice on I-65 near the Frankfort exit, adding to the hazardous conditions.
Sgt. Piers also noted that northbound traffic on I-65 was backed up near Lafayette and Indiana 26 due to another incident. Meanwhile, southbound traffic near the Dayton exit faced delays as well, though details about those incidents were not immediately available.
Drivers in the area were advised to exercise caution due to worsening weather and road conditions.
