DETROITÂ (DDN) – A week after a fatal crash at Woodward and Warren, Wayne State University employee Sharif Ali-Dinar was slain.
We learned that the suspect, Antoine Bradley, is now facing a charge of reckless driving causing death. During Bradley’s court hearing on Saturday, prosecutors claimed he was speeding at the crossing.
According to Lisa Coyle, the assistant prosecutor, the defendant was driving at 69 mph two seconds before the incident, despite the speed limit in the area being 30 mph.
Prosecutors claim Bradley did not brake until a second and a half before contact.
Bradley bowed his head in court as his counsel addressed Ali-Dinar’s death.
The 31-year-old has pleaded not guilty. His counsel claimed he was sorry. Nonetheless, the prosecutor considers him a threat to the community.
“He decided to run a red light that put other innocent bystanders, pedestrians, and motorists in danger,” according to Coyle.
Sharif Ali-Dinar graduated from Wayne State and has worked as a financial assistance consultant there since 2009.
Dr. Kimberly Andrews Espy, President of WSU, said, “He brought positivity and excitement to everyone who had the privilege of working with him. Sharif’s kind heart, generous personality, and unfailing support for others will be deeply missed.”
Back on campus, the fatal incident has made students like Travis Smart more cautious when walking near Woodward and Warren.
“There’s ignorant drivers, but that’s kind of everywhere at this point so it’s part of life,” says Smart. “So you kinda have to adapt and get used to it to prepare yourself for life.”
A judge granted Antoine Bradley a $50,000 cash bond. His next court appearance is January 28th.
