DDN – Two people were killed in a horrific car collision Thursday morning on I-57 Southbound near Ina. Around 10 a.m., emergency responders, including police and fire teams, arrived on the scene.
When they arrived, they found an SUV that had been severely damaged and was on fire near the engine. The truck was jammed between two semis and sustained substantial front and rear damage.
Three semi-trucks were involved in the crash. Illinois State Police officers removed a critically injured female passenger from the SUV and began delivering care until firemen and medical personnel arrived. Unfortunately, the male driver died from his injuries on the site.
Air Evac came shortly after and took the female passenger to a trauma facility in St. Louis, where she died of her injuries.
Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse has yet to announce the victims’ identities. The reason of the collision is unknown, and the Illinois State Police, together with collision Reconstructionists, are investigating.
