DETROIT (DDN) – A Detroit man accused of a hit-and-run that killed an off-duty Detroit police officer appeared in court Friday for a probable cause hearing.
Dayjon Antwian Macon, 28, was charged with the death of Detroit police officer Cameron Richardson, 32, on January 5.
Officials say Macon was driving south on Hoover Street near Greiner Street in Detroit around 12:05 a.m. Sunday when he reportedly collided with Richardson’s vehicle as he attempted to turn into the intersection, causing Richardson’s vehicle to roll over.
Richardson, who died on the scene, was returning home after finishing a shift.
Macon fled the scene but was eventually apprehended. He had previously been charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident when at fault — causing death, failing to stop at the scene of an accident — causing significant impairment or death, a moving violation resulting in death, and driving while suspended.
On Friday, Macon’s defense team was granted a 21-day waiver for his preliminary examination, giving them additional time to evaluate fresh digital evidence. He is due back in court on February 20.
Richardson, a US Army veteran, joined DPD a little more than a year ago. A visitation is scheduled for Friday afternoon, followed by a funeral on Saturday.
