Highway 153 Tragedy Pedestrian Killed While Crossing, Followed by Crash Involving TDOT Vehicle

DDN – The Chattanooga Police Department responded to a call at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, reporting a body in the center of Highway 153 in front of Northgate Mall.

According to Sergeant Thomas Seiter, a person wearing dark clothing was struck by northbound cars while attempting to cross the street, resulting in death.

According to Sergeant Seiten, such events are not unusual.

He notes that traffic lights are located every quarter mile up and down the freeway, allowing pedestrians to cross securely.

Around 9:30 p.m., while agencies were still on the scene, a truck collided with the back of a TDOT vehicle that was assisting with traffic redirection while police investigated.

According to Sergeant Seiten, the truck driver failed to follow the TDOT vehicle’s arrows. Before the event, authorities expected to reopen the roadways within the next five minutes.

“People are not paying attention, and then we have pedestrians wearing dark clothing: things that don’t work,” he declares.

We are working to learn more about the pedestrian fatalities and to see whether there were any injuries in the second accident with TDOT.
