(DDN) – A 12-year-old child in Connecticut was shot after throwing a snowball at a car, according to authorities.
Hartford Police Lieutenant Aaron Boisvert confirmed to PEOPLE that the little boy was shot at around 7:15 p.m. local time on Wednesday, Jan. 22, in the neighborhood of Capitol Avenue and Park Terrace in Hartford. The 11-year-old was unharmed.
Boisvert stated that the unnamed youngster was hit several times before being sent to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.
The lieutenant told PEOPLE that the boy’s injuries were not life-threatening. On Friday, Jan. 24, Boisvert said that no arrests have been made as of yet and that the probe is “very active.”
According to NBC News, the officer said at a news conference on Thursday, Jan. 23, that the car “looped the block” to allegedly chase the kids before the shooting.
“It could have been a lot worse,” he remarked, according to the site, which also said that investigators are unsure how many passengers were in the car.
“[A] 12-year-old was with another juvenile, throwing snowballs, one of those snowballs hit a car, that car looped the block and chased the kids and fired rounds at the children,” Boisvert told reporters in a video provided by Fox 61 Connecticut.
According to CBS-affiliated local television station WFSB, authorities have video footage that could be useful in the continuing investigation. According to the site, investigators “are working to identify the car and whoever was in it.”
Garfield Haylett, who was less than a block away cleaning up his restaurant when the boy was shot, told the station, “We can’t have this happening in our community.”
“It isn’t good anywhere. Why do we have to live this way? “I don’t understand it,” he said. “To put bullets in a child, it’s really disturbing.”
