Apartment Fire in East China Township Forces Evacuation of 20 Residents, No Injuries Reported

EAST CHINA TOWNSHIP, Mich.  (DDN) – According to the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, at least 20 East China Township residents were forced to leave their homes after an apartment complex caught fire early Sunday.

Just before 12:30 a.m., authorities got multiple calls reporting a fire at the Bree Manor Apartments on Bree Road.

According to the sheriff’s office, officers from the St. Clair Police Department arrived first on the site and found flames spreading throughout the structure, assisting individuals in their evacuation.

Firefighters worked rapidly to extinguish the flames and ensure residents’ safety during the frigid night, according to authorities.

There have been no injuries recorded.

The sheriff’s office reports that 20 to 30 persons have been relocated. Blue Water Area Transit dispatched a bus to transport displaced residents to a warm shelter.

St. Clair High School provided a temporary warming shelter for responders and locals, while the St. Clair Inn provided overnight lodging for residents who had nowhere else to go.

According to the sheriff’s office, the American Red Cross is helping displaced residents locate shelter.

Authorities are working to determine the cause of the fire, but foul play is not suspected.

The Community Foundation of St. Clair County is using its disaster response fund to offer food, shelter, clothing, and other necessities to the displaced residents. The group is also seeking online donations to support the locals.
