Michigan Increases Small Business Funding by $80 Million and Offers Financial Literacy Workshops in Detroit and Dearborn

Detroit (DDN) – Tonight on The Detroit Evening Report, we’ll discuss a nearly $80 million increase in financing for Michigan’s small businesses and entrepreneurs, as well as forthcoming financial literacy classes in Detroit and Dearborn.

Whitmer Introduces Small Business Credit 2.0.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced an increase in funding for small businesses under the State Small Business Credit Initiative 2.0, a federal program aimed to expand the availability of capital for small business owners through lending and investment. Over $79 million will be allocated to historically underprivileged communities and entrepreneurs seeking assistance to launch their business ideas.

ACCESS Will Provide Financial Literacy Workshops

The Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS) is partnering with JPMorgan Chase to offer financial literacy classes in Detroit and Dearborn.

The eight-week programs will teach registrants how to be financially successful. An introduction to banking, credit development, budgeting and saving, debt management, scam avoidance, and investing are some of the topics covered.

Beginning January 30, workshops in Detroit and Dearborn will be held on Thursdays. The Detroit event will be held from 1-2 p.m. at West Warren Career Center, 16427 W. Warren Ave.

Workshops in Dearborn will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. at the One-Stop Employment & Human Services Center, 6451 Schaefer Rd. This location will also provide Arabic translations. There is limited space, therefore attendees must register on the ACCESS website in advance.

The White House’s Spanish-language Page Has Been Shut Down

The White House shut down its Spanish-language website shortly after Trump’s inauguration last week. The website now displays a 404 error message. According to the Associated Press, Hispanic groups see this as a move in the wrong way. Many Spanish-speaking voters helped Trump win reelection. The White House’s Spanish X profile was likewise deleted.

During his last term, the Trump administration removed Spanish-language information from the White House website. The Census Bureau indicates that more than 43 million people in the United States speak Spanish at home.

Wayne County Seeks Suggestions for Residents to ‘Highlight’

Wayne County is looking to showcase residents who have made a good contribution to the community. Residents can suggest people they know on the county’s Instagram page.

Individuals, groups, organizations, and enterprises can all nominate candidates. Submissions are accepted via a Google Form in the county’s Instagram bio or by contacting [email protected].

Hamtramck Versus Dearborn Charity Basketball Game

Residents of Hamtramck and Dearborn will face off again in a charity basketball game on February 7 at 6 p.m. at Edsel Ford High School in Dearborn. OZ Media is organizing the fourth annual charity game, with proceeds benefiting charities in Lebanon, Palestine, and Yemen.

Many municipal leaders will participate in the game, including Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, Dearborn Superintendent Glen Maleyko, Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin, Hamtramck Police Chief Jamiel Altaheri, Hamtramck influencer Dulla Mulla, and many more.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under the age of twelve.

Bollywood High Tea at the Detroit Shipping Co.

On Saturday, February 1, the Detroit Shipping Company will hold a Bollywood-inspired “afternoon and high tea” from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event, presented by food blogger Alina Alam (@foodiesnapper), will include anecdotes about South Asian culture, karak chai, Kashmiri pink tea, sweets, and samosas.
