37 Arrested in Major Drug Trafficking Bust Across Georgia Counties, 8 Still Wanted by FBI

DOUGLAS, Ga. (DDN) – A large drug trafficking operation in Coffee, Atkinson, Ware, Bacon, and Lowndes counties has resulted in the arrests of 37 people. Six were already in police custody, and another 29 were arrested this morning.

The three persons have been charged with conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, oxycodone, and marijuana. Conviction on the crime carries a maximum sentence of up to life in prison for the majority of defendants, as well as significant financial fines and a period of supervised release following completion of any jail term.

According to Coffee County Sheriff Fred Cole, “The tips received from the community were crucial in guiding our investigation, ultimately leading to these arrest.”

The four-year FBI investigation found that much of the scheme was orchestrated from within Georgia state prisons using contraband cell phones.

The 60-count indictment involves the seizure of 21 illegally owned guns and more than $17,000.

Brian Ozden, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Atlanta FBI Office, stated, “Our message is clear: if you come to this community and commit illegal activity, we will find you and prosecute you.”

Eight people are still wanted in connection with this crime.
