Tesla Crashed on FDR Drive; One Dead and One Injured after Car gets Destroyed in Flame in New York City

NEW YORK CITY, New Y. (DDN) – A bystander reported that the vehicle was moving at a rapid pace when it collided with a wall on FDR Drive, resulting in the ejection of its two passengers.

A tragic incident occurred in New York City, where a woman lost her life and a man sustained serious injuries in a devastating Tesla crash, according to officials.

A statement from the New York City Police Department revealed that the incident took place just before 2:45 a.m. local time in Manhattan on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Emergency personnel reached the location on FDR Drive at E. 75th St. and discovered that both individuals had been thrown from the white electric vehicle, according to police reports.

Authorities reported that the woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, was declared deceased at the location. A 25-year-old male was taken to New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center located on 68th Street, where he is reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities at the location concluded that the Tesla traveling north collided with a wall, suggesting that the driver may have lost control of the car. The vehicle ignited upon impact.

An observer close to the incident reported to ABC affiliate WABC-TV that the vehicle was traveling at a high speed when the collision occurred.

A witness reported, “It was traveling at least 120, 130 [mph],” noting that “the damage was so extensive that it split in half, and then it just caught fire.”

Firefighters successfully put out the flames from the car’s lithium-ion battery, which authorities highlight as a significant hazard due to the challenges in extinguishing such fires.

The report indicates that the FDR remained closed for several hours after the accident.
