HONOLULU, Haw. (DDN) – An 86-year-old woman was badly injured in a one-car crash in Hilo on January 30 and died, according to police.
The woman, Yvonne Mira of Hilo, died on Monday at 6:21 p.m. at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.
An autopsy has been scheduled to identify the exact cause of death.
Officers responding to a 4:54 p.m. report discovered that a 2007 Honda Pilot SUV driven by 84-year-old Ken Rosene was traveling west on Kaumana Drive when it drove off the road to the right and into a ditch. After colliding with a rock embankment, the SUV came to a complete halt and blocked the westbound lane.
Mira, the front-seat passenger, remained unresponsive at the scene. Hawaii Fire Department rescue personnel extricated her from the vehicle, and she began to respond physically but not verbally. She was transferred to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, and then to The Queen’s, where she died.

Rosene was also transferred to HBMC, where he was treated for his injury and subsequently released. Following his discharge, Rosene was arrested on accusations of DUI and first-degree negligent harm. He was freed from detention to await further inquiry.
The crash is currently being examined as a negligent homicide.
