Pennsylvania Man Confesses to Killing Pug in “Rage” After Woman Ends Friendship

BUTLER CITY, Penn. (DDN) – Chyanne Callender, a woman from Pennsylvania who did “absolutely everything” with her pug Lexi, is fighting to “get justice” for the 10-year-old pooch after a man she met on a dating app stole the dog from Callender’s home and killed it “in a rage,” according to police, after being allegedly rejected by her several times.

“He kept pushing it to where he wanted things to go further, to where he kept trying to force himself onto me and I didn’t want it,” Callender told local ABC affiliate WTAE this week, following Hillard’s arrest and charge with aggravated cruelty to animals and burglary by the Butler City Police Department.

Lexi was kidnapped by him on January 5, 2024, at Callender’s home in Butler County before being “battered” by Hillard and died, according to police.

Hillard, 28, allegedly admitted last month to snatching Lexi and killing the dog. His parents informed authorities that he had mental health issues.

Callender said that the day before Lexi was abducted, she and Hillard discussed ending a friendship they had attempted to develop following her numerous rejections. She apparently told him she did not want to stay friends.

Following the dognapping, authorities investigated Hillard and visited his parents’ home to chat about what might have happened. They denied having Lexi, saying they had no reason to believe Hillard would have her. Police learned the alleged truth only after Hillard stepped into the Butler City Police Department offices more than a year later and supposedly confessed.

Callender has started an online petition on Change.org to try to urge the local district attorney’s office to pursue the strongest possible sentence for Hillard.

According to the petition, Lexi’s death is classified as animal maltreatment and pet theft, “which is graver than some might think,” the description states. The web article cites American Kennel Club statistics indicating a “70% increase in pet theft” in recent years.
