Plainfield Crash Leaves Baby Dead, Toddler Severely Burned after Fiery Crash

PLAINFIELD, Ind. (DDN) – A mother is in despair after her family was ripped apart Wednesday in a violent Plainfield vehicle accident.

Plainfield Police said an Avon officer attempted to stop a grey sedan near the intersection of U.S. 40 and Ronald Reagan Parkway. According to witnesses, the fast car entered the intersection, collided with another car, and flipped down the road before bursting into flames.

“There’s no words to describe it,” claimed a neighboring worker. “It was in flames and a crazy situation.”

Inside the car were Shadow Moore, his 2-month-old daughter Iris Moore, and his fiancé’s 3-year-old son Ares Vawter.

The witness we spoke with recounted a frantic scenario in which Moore, police, and bystanders worked to pull the children out of the car. Iris perished in the crash, but Ares survived but is currently covered in burns at Riley Hospital for Children.

“It’s really hard to watch him in so much pain,” said Ares and Iris’ mother, Jack Vawter. “He’s fully sedated, but frequently tries to get up and move and cry but he’s not able to.”

According to Vawter, Moore was driving their children from a doctor’s office to their grandparents when the accident occurred.

“They were literally driving from her 2-month doctor’s visit and everything was perfect,” Vawter said. “She was growing great. Perfectly healthy and happy and then within 30 minutes she was gone.”
Vawter explained that she had taken a shift at work that day, otherwise else she would have been with the children.

”She was just the sweetest little baby,” Vawter said. “She hardly cried and she slept through most of the night. She and her brother were just always together. They loved each other so much.”

While Vawter mourns for her daughter, she has not abandoned her son, but the severity of his burns prevents her from even holding his hand.

“They’re completely burned,” she said. “But, when I can, I’m able to hold his feet, so he knows I’m there for him and I’m really thankful I can at least do that.”

However, she claimed that her son’s lively personality persisted even after the injury.

“He is the most energetic happy little guy there is,” Vawter informed me. “I was told even on his way in here, he just wanted to tell everybody about his stickers he got at my daughter’s doctor appointment that morning.”

Vawter’s fiancé is healing. He’s scheduled to be released from the hospital Thursday afternoon after being treated for broken ribs, a fractured back, and a lacerated spleen.

“I’m going to hug him, and it’s going to be a while before I let go,” Vawter added, worrying about when she’d next see Moore. “I’m just so thankful he made it out and my son was helped.”

Milling with sadness is the aggravation of how her family’s existence was altered in only seconds.

“We were in some of the best moments of our lives, and in an instant that all changed because someone else was out there driving crazy,” Vawter told me.

According to FOX59 and CBS4, the suspect in the crash is S’Doni Pettis. Pettis was on probation for a separate charge when he committed the act. He was arrested following the crash. The Hendricks County Jail log reveals that he is back in jail, charged with three charges of resisting arrest and one offense of auto theft.

Vawter said she is not upset, but the culprit in this crash has mistreated her.

“I’m mostly angry at the guy that hit my family,” Vawter stated. “I’m very thankful for the police that were there that helped my family and helped get them to safety very quickly.”

According to Plainfield Police Department, the responding Avon policemen were burned while assisting Ares in getting out of the automobile.

Vawter hopes that speaking up would help put faces and names to the family members being discussed.

“It matters because these are real people,” Vawter added. “And sometimes when you’re just reading an article, it’s hard to really see this can happen and this is a real thing that can happen to somebody.”

Vawter wishes to share this message.

“I want everyone to drive safe and give their kids the biggest hugs they can and appreciate every little moment because you never know,” she told the crowd. “We didn’t do anything wrong here and this still happened.”

In this trying moment, Vawter requests for good remarks on social media and expresses gratitude to the community for donating to a GoFundMe to help the family.

According to court records, S’Doni Pettis had a hearing scheduled for Monday, but it was cancelled.
