Deadly Three-vehicle Crash Near Montpelier, Idaho Leaves Elderly Man Dead, Route Closed for 10 Hours

BEAR LAKE COUNTY, Idaho (DDN) – An 85-year-old man died in a three-vehicle accident near Montpelier, Idaho. The mishap was reported on Wednesday at about 1:20 p.m.

According to Idaho State Police, a Kenworth semi-truck driven by a 39-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman passenger from Port Orchard, Washington, was stopped westbound on US-30 at milepost 421.8 while waiting for a crash to be cleared.

A Lincoln MKC driven by an 85-year-old woman and an 85-year-old male passenger from Georgetown, Idaho, came to a halt behind the Kenworth semi when a white Freightliner driven by a 42-year-old man from Las Vegas, Nevada, refused to yield to the stopped vehicles.

The Freightliner collided with the Lincoln, pushing it into the left shoulder. It then crashed with the Kenworth’s trailer and came to a stop.

According to police, Lincoln’s driver and passenger were brought to a local hospital via ground ambulance. The man later died from his injuries.

The route was closed for around 10 hours.

ISP received assistance from the Idaho Transportation Department, Bear Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Bear Lake Fire Department, Caribou County Sheriff’s Office, and Soda Springs Medical.

The Idaho State Police continue to investigate this event.
