The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office has disclosed that a woman from Johns Island faces legal consequences after allegedly abandoning her children inside a vehicle following a traffic accident.
Sylvia Delvekio, a 40-year-old resident, has been charged with two offenses: failure to report striking fixtures on a highway and unlawful neglect toward a child, highlighting the severity of her actions as determined by local authorities.
According to a detailed incident report provided by the Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the scene of a collision on Monday morning at approximately 8:21 a.m. The incident occurred near the intersection of Humbert Road and Chisolm Road, a residential area on Johns Island.
A call to dispatch had alerted authorities that two teenagers remained inside the crashed vehicle while their mother was observed fleeing the scene on foot, raising immediate concerns for the safety of the minors left behind.
When a deputy arrived at the location, they discovered a 2021 GMC Yukon that had veered off the roadway, ending up in a ditch alongside Humbert Road. The vehicle had evidently drifted off the left side of the pavement and collided with a mailbox belonging to a nearby residence, causing visible damage.
Inside the SUV, deputies found two teenage girls seated, both fortunately unharmed, though no adult driver was present at the time of the initial investigation. Notably, one of the teenagers has special needs, adding an additional layer of concern regarding their well-being and the responsibility of the absent guardian.
