A powerful winter storm is sweeping across southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin on Wednesday, bringing blizzard conditions, heavy snowfall, and strong winds. Blizzard Warnings and Winter Storm Warnings remain in place, with hazardous travel expected throughout the day.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in La Crosse, the storm began as rain early Wednesday morning before shifting to snow by midday. Snowfall amounts are projected to range between 4 and 11 inches, with some locations receiving up to 10 inches depending on localized conditions. The heaviest snowfall is expected to be concentrated in a narrow band, leading to variations in accumulation.
Northeast winds are intensifying and shifting north, with sustained speeds of 20 to 40 mph and gusts reaching up to 55 mph. The strongest winds are forecasted in northeast Iowa and southeast Minnesota, creating whiteout conditions, blowing snow, and reduced visibility.
Travel conditions will be dangerous, particularly in areas under Blizzard Warnings, including Rochester, MN, and Wabasha, MN. Officials are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel, as snow-covered and icy roads may result in closures and hazardous driving conditions. Those who need to travel should check road conditions through 511 services in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin before heading out.
The storm’s most severe impacts are expected between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., with conditions improving overnight as snowfall tapers off. Residents are encouraged to stay updated on weather alerts and prepare for potential power outages due to strong winds and ice accumulation.
