WAREHAM – A Bristol County man was killed Thursday in Wareham following a vehicle collision on Cranberry Highway, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz has announced.
At approximately 4:45 p.m., 49-year-old Matthew Burns of South Attleboro was operating a motorcycle travelling northbound in the area of 2309 Cranberry Highway in Wareham when witnesses say he lost control of the vehicle. Burns subsequently veered into the southbound lane and was hit by a white Mercedes GLC300. Burns was found unresponsive by Wareham Police and Massachusetts State Police upon arrival at the scene and was pronounced deceased following cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts. At the time of the crash, Burns was accompanied by four other motorcycle operators, one of whom sustained minor injuries.
Massachusetts State Police interviewed the operator of the Mercedes GLC300 at an area hospital where she was receiving treatment following the crash. The woman told investigators she was travelling south on Cranberry Highway when she noted several motorcycle operators travelling in the opposite direction. While travelling through a bend on the highway, she told police one of the motorcycle operators lost control of his vehicle and she could not avoid crashing into the motorcycle or the operator.
The investigation into the fatal crash is still ongoing and is being conducted by Massachusetts
State Police.
