Spokane Heat Wave Continues Through Wednesday, Possible Showers Ahead

Spokane’s recent streak of hot weather is expected to persist through Wednesday and into early August, with temperatures remaining significantly above average, according to the National Weather Service.

On Monday afternoon, temperatures peaked at 92°F at Felts Field and 89°F at Spokane International Airport. The heat will intensify in the coming days, said meteorologist Joey Clevenger, who forecasts highs of up to 97°F on Wednesday.

“Tuesday and Wednesday will be hotter,” Clevenger said. “We’re expecting up through Wednesday for the heat to persist.”

Though Thursday will still reach the 90s, it’s expected to be slightly cooler than Wednesday, offering minor relief.

Storm System May Bring Cooling

A weather system arriving late Wednesday is expected to bring cloud cover and moisture, which could moderate temperatures slightly. According to Clevenger, “We’re having a system start to come late Wednesday that will be ushering in moisture that will allow for cloud cover.”

This system may also result in thunderstorms and widespread showers, potentially delivering around 0.2 inches of rain over two days.

Drought Conditions Remain

Despite the approaching moisture, drought conditions continue to affect the Spokane region. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, Spokane County is currently classified as being in a severe drought, with parts of the area listed under moderate drought. Nearly the entire state of Washington is currently experiencing drier-than-normal conditions.

Heat Wave Not Record-Breaking — But Notable

Although this warm stretch is not breaking records, it is still a notable heat wave. Clevenger explained that Spokane is currently experiencing its “peak warm period,” with temperatures running 5 to 10 degrees above normal for this time of year. The average high temperature at the airport is typically 87°F in late July.

Residents are advised to remain hydrated, limit outdoor exposure during the hottest parts of the day, and watch for any updates regarding possible thunderstorms and shifting conditions later in the week.
