Absecon Hit-and-run Father and Son Charged in Incident That Killed Dog and Injured Man

DDN – Two men are facing charges in connection with a hit-and-run in Atlantic County, New Jersey after police claim a man falsely confessed to a crime his son allegedly committed.

Absecon police said Byron A. Jones, 52, of Mays Landing, falsely confessed to the crash on November 30, 2024, that gravely injured a man and killed his dog in Absecon.

According to a department news release, the investigation revealed that Amir A. Jones, 20, of Mays Landing, was driving the car that hit the victim, 25-year-old Syed Hoque, and his dog.

After the incident near Highland Boulevard and Marlborough Avenue, the motorist fled the scene, prompting a passing driver to phone 911, officials say.

Police later caught Byron A. Jones after pulling him over while driving a car similar to the one that allegedly struck Hoque.

Amir A. Jones faces allegations include abandoning the scene of a serious bodily injury accident, striking a domestic animal, failing to report an accident, and other offenses.

Byron A. Jones is charged with obstructing the arrest of another person and making false reports to law police.

Absecon Police collaborated with the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office on the case.
