AC Transit’s Michael Hursh to Shift Roles, Leaving a Decade of Progressive Leadership Behind

General Manager and CEO Michael Hursh of AC Transit has stated that he will leave his current job effective December 14 in order to assume a new role as Senior Advisor in the transit system. During his nearly ten years in charge, Hursh has made important contributions to the development of the East Bay bus system through innovative projects and sound financial management.

During his tenure, the agency accomplished noteworthy milestones such as the reopening of the Salesforce Transit Center and the inauguration of the Tempo Bus Rapid Transit System, according to a press announcement issued by AC Transit. Hursh was also responsible for AC Transit becoming the first to provide PPE to passengers and frontline employees during the pandemic. During his tenure, the agency’s budgets were regularly balanced, and S&P Global Ratings recently upgraded its credit rating from ‘AA’ to ‘AA+’.

Hursh’s tenure as General Manager was much valued by Joel Young, President of the Board of AC Transit. “We recognized Mr. Hursh’s exceptional operational expertise when we selected him from his position as Chief Operating Officer at Valley Transportation Authority,” he told AC Transit. Young commended Hursh’s flexibility and leadership, particularly his strategic decision-making that prevented layoffs and maintained the stability of the transit system throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hursh oversaw the Mechanics Helper and Career Ladders Programs, among other projects, which addressed worker issues and resulted in increases in hiring and retention. The transportation district implemented cutting-edge management systems and consumer interaction platforms as part of Hursh’s goal for technological advancements. Additionally, he supported laws like Assembly Bill 917, which gave cameras the authority to enforce stop laws and bus lanes. Hursh’s commitment to zero-emission transit is also described in the press release, which includes obtaining funds for the development of training initiatives in collaboration with nearby educational institutions and the expansion of hydrogen fuel infrastructure.
