Arizonans planning to traverse the state’s higher altitudes will need to reroute as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announces the seasonal closure of several mountainous state routes due to incoming winter conditions. Starting the procession, State Route 473 will be closed from State Route 260 to Hawley Lake in the White Mountains tomorrow, while State Route 366, known as Swift Trail, will cease access to its upper sections past the Shannon Campground on Mt. Graham starting Friday.
Drivers frequenting these routes should plan for additional closures, including the winter closing of State Routes 261 and 273 in the White Mountains; both are scheduled to shut down on Sunday, December 29, however, early snowfall could precipitate these routes’ shuttering. While SR 67 will close on Monday, December 2, and will likely remain impassable until its anticipated reopening around mid-May along with North Rim visitor facilities, highway US 89A will maintain its open status at the junction with SR 67, becoming a critical link for motorists in the region.
ADOT advises travelers to stay informed of changing road conditions by consulting az511.gov, which offers real-time highway conditions and camera feeds showcasing the state’s diverse weather landscapes; drivers should not venture into these wintery roads without checking in advance lest they face the inconvenience of unexpected closures, as
reported by ADOT.
ADOT offers resources for safe winter travel at azdot.gov/KnowSnow, providing guidelines for navigating snow-covered roads. With certain routes closing, ADOT’s proactive communication helps minimize disruptions and ensures commuters are prepared for winter weather challenges.
