The Allegheny County Health Department has closed the Tan Lac Vien Vietnamese restaurant in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh, following an inspection that revealed several health violations. According to a report from
CBS News Pittsburgh
, the health department discovered rodent droppings, roaches, and unsanitary fluid accumulation as an imminent hazard, warranting the immediate shutdown.
The inspector’s findings included fluid “seeping” through the basement walls onto the food preparation area floors and a case of daikon radish infested with rodent droppings.
As
CBS News Pittsburgh
reported, “on many, if not all, of the individual” radishes were contaminated; the report further detailed discoveries of rodent droppings across multiple areas, such as inside a fryer, behind pots, in the storage room, and the men’s bathroom.
Adding to the disturbing conditions, roaches were found throughout the basement, a situation worsened by ongoing water issues on the floor.
Corroborating these findings,
Audacy
covered the story, noting 17 violations, five of which were high-risk. Violations also included food storage temperatures exceeding safety guidelines, with beans stored at 50F and noodles in water in a soy sauce bucket at 68F. Further, there appeared to be a lack of appropriate handwashing facilities in the kitchen area, with employees reportedly washing their hands only in the bathroom.
As of yesterday, the closure is still listed on the county’s website, indicating the establishment’s ongoing compliance issues.
