Alterra Mountain Company Acquires Iconic Arapahoe Basin Ski Area in Summit County

The Summit County ski resort known for its long seasons, Arapahoe Basin, has been formally purchased by Alterra Mountain Company, the company that owns the Ikon Pass and oversees almost 20 other locations. According to KDVR, this acquisition, which was completed in February and made public on Tuesday, puts the cherished winter sports site under the control of a business that already has a sizable presence in the mountain resort sector.

A smooth transition into the forthcoming 2024–25 ski season appears to be the goal of the sale of A-Basin, which comes with a promise of little immediate change to the ski area’s operating flow or its services to winter skiers. According to information obtained by CPR, Alan Henceroth, the COO of A-Basin and a 36-year veteran of the resort, will continue to lead the charge under the new ownership mantle and maintain his oversight of day-to-day operations. He stated that the partnership with Alterra, which has existed since 2019 through the Ikon Pass, shares a common vision regarding the distinctiveness and future expansion of A-Basin.

He is looking to improve the ski and ride experience for guests of all ability levels, including but not limited to parking and snowmaking improvements, as part of a ten-year master development plan. These improvements pay homage to the resort’s lengthy history of development, which has been chronicled by The Denver Gazette. Over the past almost thirty years, the resort has expanded to 1,428 acres, installed new buildings, renovated elevators, and opened the highest elevation restaurants in North America.

Local ski enthusiasts breathed a sigh of relief when they were assured that there would be no changes to the current season pass, including those related to the Ikon Pass for the upcoming season. This move strengthens the intended seamlessness of this noteworthy transaction in the high-country compendium of Colorado’s ski industry. Arapahoe Basin’s recent move to 100% renewable electricity marks a significant step towards the resort’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2025, a pledge that has been firmly in place since 2018 and is in line with Alterra’s broader vision for sustainable practices within the brand’s expansive portfolio.
