AMC Theatres Set to Revive Movie-Going in Chicago’s South Loop with 2025 Opening

With AMC Theatres taking over for the ShowPlace Icon Theatre, which closed its doors in the summer, the South Loop’s cinematic scene is poised for a comeback. Specifically, the AMC Roosevelt Collection 16 is scheduled to open in early 2025, demonstrating the chain’s dedication to growing its presence in areas thought to have few movie theater options. Both the local community and moviegoers are interested in the announcement, which was covered by the Chicago Sun-Times and WGN-TV on November 14.

The presence of AMC in the Roosevelt Collection retail complex is a strong indication of purpose, even though the specifics of the lease are still under wraps, as an AMC representative explained the company’s policy to not disclose such facts. The press statement states that the theaters will have power-reclining seats and that a full menu, including but not limited to beer, wine, and cocktails, would be available at the concession stand after the debut. “In recent years, AMC has made it a priority to strengthen our circuit by identifying popular and well-performing theaters in areas where we believe moviegoers are underserved,” said Executive Vice President Dan Ellis of AMC, highlighting the strategic significance of this move, according to the WGN-TV report.

The ShowPlace Icon Theatre’s sudden shutdown was a part of a broader pattern in which its parent corporation shut down theaters across the country, notably in Minnesota and California. On July 1st, the theater in the South Loop, which had been a major part of the Chicago film scene since its opening in 2009, was particularly affected. It was well-known for its upscale amenities, which included VIP seats, excellent sound and projection systems, a lounge with specialty cocktails, and a selection of sandwiches and mini-pizzas.

The addition of AMC is positioned to bring the moviegoing experience back into the community’s array of facilities, since the Roosevelt Collection currently houses a number of tenants, including LensCrafters and Ulta Beauty. CBRE’s Deirdre Larsen noted, “We are thrilled to be welcoming AMC to our lineup of dining, retail, fitness, and lifestyle amenities here at Roosevelt Collection Shops,” highlighting the Roosevelt Collection’s distinct character and potential as a community center. According to the promotional materials supplied by the Chicago Sun-Times, AMC also guarantees that members of the AMC Stubs A-List will be able to take use of their membership privileges at this new location.
