(CBS DETROIT)Detroit hosted its 27th annual All-Star Giveback Thanksgiving edition on Tuesday, which means that thousands of Detroiters and those in need will receive free turkeys and meal kits.
On a first-come, first-served basis, 3,000 Detroit families received thousands of pounds of food at the event, which took place at Eastern Market Shed 5. Green beans, carrots, potatoes, mac & cheese, cranberry sauce, and, of course, turkeys were among the dishes.
Tarence Wheeler, the CEO of the Tarence Wheeler Foundation, is the guy at the forefront.
“It’s big for the community; this is everything, man,” Wheeler, who is also assisting with the food kit distribution arrangements, said. “At the end of the day, it is not about us, it is about the people making sure they have a great holiday with loved ones thankful for another day above ground.”
To get some turkeys and meal kits to feed their families, Detroiters had to wait for hours in bitterly cold weather.
Serving the community is an honor, according to Wheeler.
“Things are tough economically, how do we provide something free for our children and families,” Wheeler stated. “We always say if not us then who.”
From NBA and NFL players to local politicians and entertainers, the event has been supported by a number of personalities over the years.
Food and comfort were also provided by a number of partners, including Ford Motor Company, Comerica Bank, DTE Energy, and the Detroit Medical Center.
Wheeler, who was raised in poverty, claimed that this purpose resonates with him and that’s why it keeps growing.
“It’s about the people and making sure people have hope tomorrow and that tomorrow is a better day,” Wheeler stated.
Rapper Big Sean, former Detroit Lion Calvin Johnson, former Detroit Piston Isiah Thomas, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer are among the personalities anticipated to attend.
