APEX, N.C. (DDN) – Part of U.S. 64 was closed in Apex near Toll 540 for almost two hours Saturday afternoon due to a crash caused by police chasing a minivan whose occupants were involved in an armed robbery, according to police.

Just after 3 p.m., police reported that eastbound U.S. 64 just before the 540 interchange was closed due to a crash involving casualties. The far left lane was later opened until well after 5 p.m., when all lanes were reopened.

According to authorities, the incident began about 2:30 p.m. with an armed robbery at a business in the Beaver Creek Commons shopping area.

Police said the suspect and two others fled in a car and on foot, prompting a chase on US 64 east.

The silver minivan was traveling on a rim without a front tire, and “sparks were all over the place,” a Pittsboro resident told CBS 17.

The Pittsboro man said he initially noticed the chase near U.S. 1 and then came across the minivan after it did a U-turn near Rex Hospital. He and his wife were astounded that the minivan was moving over 60 mph without a front tire.

As they drove west toward Pittsboro, the witness reported seeing the crashed minivan alongside a red pickup truck.
