Area Near Tesla Gigafactory in Austin Evacuated Due to Natural Gas Leak

Early Wednesday morning, a natural gas leak prompted the Austin Fire Department (AFD) to evacuate an area near the Tesla Gigafactory in Austin, Texas. The event began unfolding at 9:51 a.m. when AFD was called to address what was described as a “hazardous materials incident” at 13000 Tesla Road. Officials set up an isolation zone by 10:11 a.m. to ensure the safety of personnel in the vicinity,

reported.

It was later confirmed by Atmos Energy that a construction crew working near the Gigafactory had inadvertently damaged the gas pipeline, leading to the leak. The AFD announced evacuations as a precaution and clarified that the Gigafactory itself was not evacuated, but a nearby cooling station was. Traffic disruptions were expected as a result of the incident, with the AFD advising drivers to seek alternative routes.

The pipeline rupture’s exact cause remains unclear, however, and as of the last update at 11:30 a.m., AFD indicated that crews were securing the scene but did not provide further details. The AFD had previously managed an evacuation in October due to a brush fire that threatened several structures, including a small school, as noted by

MySA.

No injuries were reported in the previous event.

Atmos Energy is actively engaged in resolving the situation with technicians on-site to execute repairs. While efforts are in motion to contain and rectify the damage caused by the incident, the repercussions of such an event reach beyond mere inconvenience, straining emergency response systems and disrupting daily commerce and lives.
