Arlington Launches “Water Utilities University” to Educate Citizens on Local Water Operations

Arlington Water Utilities is launching an innovative educational outreach that will allow residents to delve deeply into the functions and operations of their local water department. As reported yesterday, the

City of Arlington

is now accepting applicants for the first Arlington Water Utilities University. This initiative marks a significant step from the award-winning department in fostering community engagement and awareness about the water and wastewater systems sustaining the city.

The academy will last five weeks, during which attendees can tour key facilities, including the Pierce Burch Water Treatment Plant and the John F. Kubala Water Treatment Plant. Participants will also have an up-close opportunity to learn quickly from water department leadership and frontline staff members. According to the City’s announcement, the program comprises interactive activities designed to offer insight into the complexities and rewards associated with the water industry.

A true appreciation for the department’s efforts seems to be at the heart of this academy. “The dedicated men and women of the Arlington Water Utilities team play a vital role in protecting public health for our city. They manage and maintain billions of dollars’ worth of infrastructure, ensuring resilience in the face of challenges like rapid population growth and water scarcity. Arlington Water Utilities University will offer residents a unique opportunity to learn about the essential work they do and get to know the team that makes it all possible,” Alex Whiteway, Arlington Water Utilities Director, stated, as per the

City’s website

.

Arlington citizens interested in joining the inaugural class of this educational journey can quickly apply online through January 20, 2025. The process promises to be simple, with selections to be made and participants contacted the following February. Classes are currently set to be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on alternate Wednesdays at different locations, tentatively scheduled for March 5, 19, April 2, April 16, and April 30. Upon course completion, attendees will be recognized at a special graduation ceremony, receiving a certificate to mark their achievement officially.
