Arlington to Honor Veterans with Wreaths Across America Ceremony on December 14

Arlington’s tribute to fallen heroes will unfold with greenery and solemn memories on December 14 as part of the Wreaths Across America initiative. Volunteers from the community are invited to join the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Lucretia Council Cochran Chapter in honoring veterans by laying wreaths at local cemeteries.

In an effort that captures the broad sweep of national gratitude, Arlington will see its Arlington Cemetery, located at 801 S. Mary St., and the adjoining Parkdale Cemetery at 701 S. Mary St., become sites of commemoration when the ceremonies start at 11 a.m. Still seeking volunteers and sponsors, the chapter points to a nationwide force of about two million volunteers preparing to lay wreaths over 4,600 locations, according to an initiative celebrated by TheCity of Arlington’s announcement.

This year, the local chapter has set an admirable target: to raise enough funds for 889 wreaths one for each headstone of the heroes resting in Arlington Cemetery and Parkdale Cemetery. The chapter members’ words aim to bring the community together in patriotic commemoration and ensure that the individuals who served to protect our country’s freedoms are never forgotten.

Those interested in contributing to this cause of collective remembrance, either through volunteer work or financial sponsorship, can make their mark. A wreath sponsorship costs $17, an investment in greenery and the green, fertile memory of service and sacrifice
