Arlington Touts Successful Recycling Initiative Ahead of America Recycles Day

As we head towards America Recycles Day on Nov. 15, officials

remind residents of the importance of environmental responsibility and sustainability through their recycling programs. According to the

City of Arlington

‘s announcement, Arlington saw a significant contribution from its citizens,

who recycled approximately 21,781 tons via curbside single-stream recycling in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30.

Curbside recycling in Arlington is comprehensive, accepting various items such as paper, cardboard, glass bottles, jars (without the need for separation), aluminum cans, plastic containers, water bottles, and metal cans.

The city provides clear instructions on the City of Arlington’s recycling webpage for those unsure about what can be recycled or how to properly prepare recyclables

. Residents are cautioned that if the item is not listed, it is not accepted in the curbside program, and to avoid contamination, ‘if in doubt, throw it out.’

With the holiday season fast approaching, it’s also important to note that festive items such as Christmas lights, tinsel, and decorations should not find their way into the recycling cart. Instead, Arlington has a dedicated program for Christmas tree recycling. From Dec. 26 to Jan. 15, 2025, residents can drop off their decorations-free Christmas trees at designated locations to be turned into mulch, which is later offered back to the community.

The local efforts don’t stop there; residents are encouraged to mow or mulch their leaves, which can naturally fertilize lawns. Bagged leaves typically won’t be recycled. However, those who prefer dropping off their leaves can do so at the Arlington Landfill with no cost attached. In terms of electronic waste, the public is already sparking interest in the upcoming annual Computer Roundup in March 2025, where they can dispose of their electronic devices responsibly. Last year, nearly 25,000 pounds of electronic waste were collected at this event, indicating a strong community engagement with sustainable practices.
