Arlington Unveils First Inclusive Playground at Meadowbrook Park, Marking Strides in Accessibility for Children

Last Saturday, the city turned the leaf on accessibility with the grand opening of its first inclusive playground at Meadowbrook Park. Part of the Meadowbrook Centennial Celebration, the park’s newest addition, is designed to ensure kids of all abilities have the opportunity to play together. The grand affair, as detailed by theCity of Arlington’s official news release, attracted locals with festivities including carnival rides, face painting, and live performances.

In a move to substantially raise the inclusivity bar, Arlington Mayor Jim Ross expressed the city’s commitment: “This is a totally inclusive playground, and that s our objective here in Arlington to make this a home for everybody,” he reportedly said in a statement detailed by theCity of Arlington. The playground’s features are meant to not only include but actively engage children with varying abilities, from wheelchair-friendly chill spinners to sensory cozy domes and accessible chair swings.

Lyly Nguyen, a mother at the event, was quoted in an interview with theCity of Arlington, sharing her enthusiasm: I think it s amazing. It s very, very huge. There are a lot of activities to do. I like how big it is for different age groups. There s climbing, and there s even something for special needs children. I like that they have that option for them.

Other highlights from the inclusive playground include the We-Go-Round, which allows children in wheelchairs to roll in and safely enjoy spinning alongside their peers, and the Zip Line (KidKrooz), featuring two tracks to ensure that children with and without mobility aids can experience the thrill of zipping through the air.
