On September 19, a student from Arizona State University is accused of stabbing her friend twice in a Glendale classroom in what appeared to be a random attack.
Kaci Lenise-Charlie Sloan, 19, is accused by Maricopa County officials of first-degree attempted murder, aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct with a weapon in relation to the attack on student Mara Daffron.
GoFundMe pages for Daffron were set up by her neighbors, who described her as having been “stabbed several times, but luckily, she is making great progress and is on the mend.”
A student named Matthew McCormick intervened quickly to put an end to the alleged stabbing, so sparing Daffron’s life. He saw the attack taking place in their classroom.
“In that moment I didn’t really have a thought going through my head I just knew that I felt compelled to do something,” McCormick stated.
A professor was among the around thirteen witnesses who described the attack to authorities. According to a probable cause affidavit that Fox News Digital was able to get, the stabbing happened “without any provocation or any words spoken.”
In their report, police supported McCormick’s statement by noting that one of the witnesses “was able to disarm the defendant by pulling the knife away from the defendant’s right hand and threw it [sic] away from them.”
At that moment, a second witness “kicked the knife to the back of the classroom.”
“Another witness described the defendant [sic] was sitting in the classroom at a desk and suddenly got up and ran at the victim as the victim entered the classroom and stabbed her multiple times,” according to the affidavit.
Sloan was “about to commit” an act, according to a handwritten letter that investigators discovered inside her backpack, but it “did not specifically state what she was referring to.”
In an interview with detectives following the alleged incident, Sloan also reportedly stated that she wanted to “hurt somebody” in class that day. She decided to attack Daffron because she was “an easier target” than the other individual, whom she called “a veteran.”

As soon as the police came, they took Daffron to a local hospital so that she could get her wounds treated.
“ASU Police continue to investigate a Sept. 19 on-campus stabbing of a student. Kaci Sloan was immediately detained and arrested on suspicion of first-degree attempted murder; aggravated assault with a deadly weapon; interfering with an educational institution; and disorderly conduct. She is being held on a $250,000 cash only bond,” an ASU spokesperson stated. “ASU and the entire ASU West Valley community are deeply saddened by what happened. ASU West Valley is a close-knit campus of students, faculty and staff. Counseling support is available to all.”
