Armed staff stop a smash-and-grab robbery at a Sunnyvale jewelry business

According to investigators, armed personnel prevented the latest attempted robbery of a jewelry store in Sunnyvale by crashing a vehicle into the building.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon inside a jewelry store on East El Camino Real, between Poplar and Helen Avenues, just west of the Lawrence Expressway.

According to a news release from the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, police responded and discovered that a car had purposely rammed the facility to gain inside. However, armed store staff confronted the numerous suspects, forcing them to depart in separate vehicles before entering the business, according to the DPS.

The DPS said that no shots were fired, no items or cash were taken, and no one was hurt.

The car used to ram into the store was stolen, according to the DPS, and one of the suspects’ fleeing automobiles was later discovered abandoned and stolen.

It was the latest in a string of brazen jewelry store robberies or attempted robberies in Sunnyvale and other Bay Area cities over the last few months. Last month, robbers stole products from a jewelry business on the same block in Sunnyvale by ramming a stolen vehicle into the building during the day, seriously injuring the store owner and almost hurting customers.

After obtaining admission, the DPS stated that multiple suspects utilized hammers to destroy display cases and steal an unspecified amount of jewelry before departing in separate vehicles, leaving the stolen vehicle behind.

In March, burglars used a stolen automobile to smash another jewelry store in Sunnyvale, located less than a mile west on El Camino Real between S. Wolfe Road and Maria Lane. In that occasion, a store employee confronted the robbers, who left without taking anything, according to the DPS.

Last month, criminals attempted a similar theft at a Dublin jewelry store by smashing a stolen car through the security gates. According to accounts, they went empty-handed because the business’s owner had removed products from display cases after learning about a similar smash-and-grab burglary from a Fremont diamond store just days before.

Anyone with knowledge on the most recent robbery attempt was encouraged to contact Detective E. Rosette at 408-730-7110.
