Assistant Sheriff Matthew Fox Steps Down Amidst Allegations Within San Mateo Sheriff’s Office

San Mateo County Assistant Sheriff Matthew Fox resigned today, leaving the department amid a tidal wave of conflict, according to the officers’ union. Fox, a 25-year veteran of local law enforcement, resigned two months after receiving a promotion, according to NBC Bay Area, which was verified by the deputies’ union.

Following his departure, a divisive 400-page report that accused the Sheriff’s Office of malfeasance undermined Sheriff Christina Corpus’s credibility. According to KTVU, the investigation, which was made public earlier this week, detailed ongoing allegations of retribution, a usage of homophobic and racially offensive language, and an inappropriate romantic relationship at work. Corpus has strongly refuted the claims. “I am completely baffled, shocked, and dismayed about the inquiry and its many falsehoods,” she stated. It is untrue to say that I am a racist or homophobe. I would never use those words, and I never will.

The subject of the alleged affair, Victor Aenlle, was promoted from Chief of Staff to Assistant Sheriff by Corpus, in what some may believe was an attempt to strengthen her position. This action was taken just before the Board of Supervisors unanimously voted against her in a no-confidence vote. According to his biography, which includes a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies from Union Institute & University, Aenlle, whose law enforcement qualifications as a reserve deputy have been questioned in the article, also has experience in business, investigation, and healthcare, as reported by KTVU.

More than 100 sworn employees have left the San Mateo Sheriff’s Office since Corpus took office, initiating a mass departure of law enforcement professionals due to the unrest there. Among them is the highly renowned Undersheriff Chris Hsiung, whose June departure was the subject of the independent report. In addition, the deputies’ group denounced the timing of Carlos Tapia’s arrest on felony theft charges, calling it a possible act of retaliation. According to KTVU, the District Attorney’s office has not yet brought any charges in that instance.
