Attorneys General from 46 States Rally Behind AG Lopez for Stricter FCC Regulations against Robocalls

Attorney General Anne Lopez has led a bipartisan group of 46 state attorneys general calling on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to strengthen its efforts against robocallers. Lopez emphasized the need to stop harmful calls from entering the telephone network. The FCC’s Robocall Mitigation Database (RMD), which requires voice service providers to register to operate in the U.S., has faced criticism for allowing scammers to obtain legitimate registrations and spread illegal robocalls, according to a release from theOffice of the Governor website.

The coalition argues that since the Robocall Mitigation Database was created in 2021, it has been ineffective, with companies submitting unchecked information and facing no serious consequences for false or incomplete data. To address this, the attorneys general are calling for stronger rules, including clear submission guidelines, validation procedures to identify suspicious data, and strict penalties, such as blocking non-compliant providers. Attorney General Lopez, a member of the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force, is aligning this effort with the group’s ongoing goal to reduce illegal robocalls.

The attorney general’s office also provided advice on identifying scam calls and texts. It warned against callers pretending to be from government agencies and asking for payments via gift cards or cryptocurrency, and advised against sharing personal information in response to unexpected requests. If fraudulent activity occurs, individuals should hang up and contact official numbers or report the incident to authorities like the Federal Trade Commission at www.donotcall.gov or the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. Attorney General Lopez is supported in this effort by most U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
