Attorneys General United in Urging FCC to Strengthen Measures Against Illegal Robocalls

Attorney General Mayes, supported by 46 other Attorneys General, called on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to update its Robocall Mitigation Database (RMD) in a concerted effort to combat illegal robocalls. The partnership wants to fix a gap in the U.S. phone network that scammers exploit. Mayes emphasized the gravity of the problem by saying, “Illegal robocalls are not only annoying they’re a gateway to fraud and scams affecting millions of Americans,” as stated in a press release from the Arizona Attorney General’s office.

Perpetrators still bombard American citizens with unwanted calls and texts, despite prior attempts to curb this invasive and frequently dishonest behavior. A news statement from the Arizona Attorney General’s office claims that the RMD has not been able to successfully weed out illegal businesses since it was created in 2021. Currently, businesses can submit unscreened information with little consequence, flooding the phone network with false calls.

The coalition is advocating for measures that would force service providers to submit accurate data, meet submission dates, and go through validation checks to remove entries that are erroneous or questionable in order to strengthen the controls. More importantly, they are supporting the implementation of severe sanctions, such as preventing noncompliant providers from being approved and allowed to use the national phone system. The goal of these modifications is to strengthen defenses against the flood of illegal robocalls that so many Americans are subjected to.

Leading the effort by looking into and pursuing enforcement actions against important actors in the robocall ecosystem is Attorney General Mayes, who is an active member of the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force. The coalition, which includes Attorneys General from the District of Columbia and states as diverse as California, New York, and Texas, is committed to reducing the number of these intrusive calls and protecting consumers from the dangers of fraud and scams.
