Austin Developer Nate Paul Booked for Contempt Amid Separate Fraud Charges

Austin’s real estate developer Nate Paul, known for his connection to the impeachment trial of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, has been booked into the Travis County jail. Asreported by FOX 7 Austin, Paul’s incarceration on Thursday night stems from a contempt of court charge for making false statements in a lawsuit against him by the Mitte Foundation, and not his association with Paxton. Accused of defrauding the charity, Paul has maintained his innocence.

Paul’s 10-day sentence comes after State District Judge Jan Soifer found him continuously refusing to comply with a court order regarding the civil case. Bearing a history of legal troubles, he began serving his sentence due to the contempt charge last year, according to the information provided by Austin American-Statesman. Apart from the lawsuit by the Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Foundation, which claims Paul engaged in fraudulent activities, he is also facing separate indictments relating to alleged financial crimes.

Records indicate that Paul was booked into the county facility at 10:14 p.m., just before his required appearance, adhering to Judge Soifer’s instruction to start serving no later than Friday. While the case connected to the contempt ruling is distinct from his criminal charges, he is indicted on multiple counts of wire fraud and is accused of misleading financial institutions. Defence attorneys have raised concerns about the propriety of evidence collection and potential breaches of attorney-client privilege in their client’s federal case.

During the tumultuous impeachment process of Attorney General Ken Paxton last year, Paul’s interactions with Paxton were thoroughly scrutinized. Although Paul was implicated as part of the controversy, he was never called upon to testify. Lawmakers accused Paxton of accepting gifts and favors from Paul, which were sharply rebuffed by Paxton’s legal representation. Notably, the attorney general was acquitted by the Texas Senate in a decision that mirrored party loyalties and despite the House bringing forward 20 charges against him, as mentioned inAustin American-Statesman’s coverage.
