Austin Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting, Suspect Fatally Shot After Escalating Crime Spree

The Austin Police Department (APD) is deep into the investigation of a recent officer-involved shooting that transpired on the morning of Thursday, Nov. 7. The incident, which concluded with a suspect being fatally shot, occurred at 9501 N FM 620, as announced by the

APD in a press release

. The officers involved, ranging from four to fourteen years of service within the department, have been placed on administrative leave in compliance with standard procedure.

In an effort to maintain community trust, the APD has released audio and video from the ongoing investigation, despite the preliminary nature of the details. This evidence is being examined in two concurrent investigations; a criminal one by the APD Special Investigations Unit, in partnership with the Travis County District Attorney’s Office, and an administrative one by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, overseen by the Office of Police Oversight. A criminal was observed on home camera footage initiating a series of dangerous events leading to the shooting, according to information from

the APD statement.

The series of incidents began when Zachary Labrie, after evading a traffic stop, was later seen on Ring camera footage forcibly entering an apartment. He subsequently committed two armed carjackings, and was eventually located by APD’s Violent Crimes Task Force. An encounter between Labrie and law enforcement escalated when he reportedly pointed a handgun at one of the detectives. The fatal shooting by police occurred at 8:47 a.m., and despite life-saving efforts, Labrie was pronounced dead shortly after. This account was pieced together through official releases and video footage provided.
