POMONA, Cali. (DDN) – Two people were killed and a baby was badly injured Saturday after a wrong-way motorist collided with two automobiles on the 60 Freeway near Pomona, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Shortly after 11 p.m., CHP received notification of a wrong-way driver on the westbound lanes of the 60 Freeway near the 71 Freeway. Just minutes later, the agency was notified of a crash in the westbound lanes of the 60 Freeway, near Reservoir Street.
The investigation indicated that Rick Rodriguez, 24, of Pomona, was driving east on the freeway’s westbound lanes when he collided head-on with a 2018 Honda Civic. The incident forced Rodriguez to collide with another car, a 2019 Toyota Highlander.
The Honda’s driver and passenger perished on the scene as a result of the collision. Both were Huntington Park residents; the driver was a 29-year-old lady, and the passenger was 39 years old. Their names have not been disclosed.
A one-year-old was also riding in the Honda. The infant had serious injuries and was transported to the Children’s Hospital of Orange County.
The driver of the Toyota was sent to Pomona Valley Hospital with minor injuries.
Meanwhile, Rodriguez was rushed to Pomona Valley Hospital and treated for serious injuries. He was then detained on accusations of DUI.
