Baltimore and Mid-Atlantic Brace for Heavy Snowfall, Winter Storm Warnings Issued

As predicted by the National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC, people of Baltimore and the surrounding Mid-Atlantic region are preparing for winter weather. Due to a nearby upper-level low-pressure system, cold temperatures, mountain snow, and windy conditions are predicted to continue through tonight. Snowfall rates are predicted to reach 1-2 inches per hour. The National Weather Service predicts that 6 to 12 inches of snow could fall through Saturday morning, with some mountain regions seeing storm total snowfall of 12 to 18 inches.

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are still in force in several counties due to the winter storm. Travel along the Allegheny Front and surrounding areas is severely disrupted, especially along important routes like I-68 and US-219. According to the forecast discussion, snow accumulations have so far ranged between 1 and 4 inches, with more buildup expected. Travel and outdoor activities will be made more difficult by blowing and drifting snow, which can occasionally result in whiteout conditions, and gusty winds with chill factors in the teens and twenties.

The first snowflakes of the season are on the menu for Baltimore and the regions east of the Alleghenies. Later in the morning and into the afternoon, a rain/snow mix is expected to move southward, possibly leaving a fresh layer of 1 to 3 inches in some areas. In addition to these accumulations, later in the day, wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph may cause certain regions to be under a Wind Advisory. “An additional 6 to 12 inches of snow is forecast today through Saturday morning with, locally heavier amounts above 3000 feet,” the National Weather Service report said, outlining the expected snowfall for the elevations that will be impacted.

With the high pressure inching from the south and the upper-level low moving out to sea, the weather should get better throughout the course of the weekend. However, with high-end Small Craft Advisories in effect through Saturday night and the possibility of Gale force gusts looming over the bay and lower tidal Potomac, marine operations are still on high alert. With mostly dry conditions forecast, the beginning of the next week might provide a break from the cold weather. However, around Thanksgiving, a low-pressure system and a possible Nor’easter could upend the situation once more, raising new worries of snow, possibly even east of the mountains.
