Berkeley Man Sentenced and Faces Deportation After Road Rage Incident and Firearm Possession in St. Charles

A 22-year-old man from Berkeley, Missouri, has been sentenced to a year and a day in prison following a road rage incident in St. Charles that led to the discovery of a gun and fraudulent identification documents in his vehicle. The individual, Donnovan Mallen, will face deportation after his prison term is completed. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Eastern District of Missouri, Mallen admitted to firing a weapon during the February 2021 incident, claiming he was being shot at by another vehicle.

When local authorities investigated, they found a loaded 10mm semi-automatic pistol under the front passenger seat of Mallen’s Dodge Charger, as well as a fraudulent Permanent Resident Card and Social Security card. “Mallen admitted in a guilty plea in August that on Feb. 26, 2021, he was driving to work when a vehicle followed him and fired four shots at him in St. Charles, Missouri. Mallen said he fired once into the air,” the document states. Police reported that Mallen’s vehicle had sustained damage, with a shattered rear window being noted as evidence of the gunfire exchange, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office Eastern District of Missouri.

Mallen was prosecuted for illegal entry and unlawful possession of a firearm by an illegal alien. His case falls under the realm of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed to reduce violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and their communities. Initially launched on May 26, 2021, this strategy emphasizes building trust within communities, supporting preventative efforts by local organizations, strategic enforcement, and results measurement.

Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Christian Goeke led the prosecution of Mallen’s case, which was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the St. Charles Police Department. “This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone,” detailed the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
