A suspect has been taken into custody in connection with a hammer assault that happened in Northwest, D.C., this past summer, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. A victim was brutally assaulted with a hammer on a Saturday night in July on the busy 18th Street. After that, the suspect fled the scene in a car before the police could reach him.
Magel Duarte, 37, of Bethesda, Maryland, was not found and taken into custody by the police until months later, following a thorough investigation. Duarte was arrested on November 19, 2024, and is currently being charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, according to a statement issued by the MPD.
When the initial incident happened on July 13, 2024, at approximately 10:10 p.m., Third District officers were called to the location.
The culprit was eventually apprehended by the Third District Crime Suppression Team using a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant as a result of the investigators’ persistent efforts.
