Blaze Ravages North Highlands Apartment Complex, Over 40 Displaced

Last night, a major fire consumed an apartment complex in the North Highlands, requiring a tremendous effort from nearby fire departments and leaving occupants in a state of anxiety. According to an ABC10 report, more than 85 firefighters fought the fire and the difficulties presented by strong winds that threatened to worsen the situation as the flames ripped through the building on the 3600 block of A Street, preventing more damage and evacuating residents.

32 apartment units spread over two buildings were evacuated following the incident. All 16 of the flats in the first building were damaged, nine of them seriously. According to CBS News, despite being unaffected by the fire, the second building lost electricity because of charred electrical cables. Residents now have to deal with navigating the days ahead without the conveniences of home after their lives were suddenly upended.

While the immediate needs of those affected continue to emerge, Metro Fire of Sacramento and the Red Cross quickly responded to organize support for the more than 40 people now displaced, with their joint efforts focused on obtaining temporary lodging. Parker Wilbourn, the battalion chief for the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, told ABC10, “We are fortunate there were no fatalities, and no additional buildings damaged,” demonstrating the unwavering resolve and skillful reaction that characterized the night’s efforts.

Surprisingly few people were hurt during the turmoil, although three people—including one who had inhaled smoke—were admitted to the hospital. Others have started the rebuilding process by moving into temporary housing, including motels, while others are currently concentrating on their recuperation and mending. Thirteen people in immediate need of shelter are receiving assistance from the Red Cross. According to ABC10 news, the cause of the fire is still being investigated, and no information has been released to comfort the many lives that have been upended by the firestorm.
